In the world of recruiting, sometimes a school will wait more than a year for a commitment, while at other times it only takes a few days or even minutes. For offensive lineman Tommy Hopkins of Thornwood (N.Y.) Westlake, he did not need too much time to realize that UConn was where he wanted to be, as the big lineman committed to the Huskies last night.
With Tommy in school this morning, his father, Kevin Hopkins, spoke with UConnReport.com about his son's commitment.
"Tommy committed to UConn last night," said Mr. Hopkins. "He called Coach Wholley, and then called and spoke to Coach Pasqualoni, who were real happy."
UConn had just offered Tommy on Friday, but had long known about his talents, abilities and potential.
"They really liked him at camps last year and recruited him harder than any other school," said Mr. Hopkins.
Throughout the recruiting process, Tommy became more and more familiar with the UConn coaching staff.
"Coach Wholley did a great job developing a relationship with Tommy and his coach," said Mr. Hopkins. "He was always very candid with everyone during the whole process."
While the offer may have only come a few days ago, UConn has long been on Tommy's mind.
"Basically UConn has been his #1 since last year," said Mr. Hopkins. "Living just a few minutes from the Connecticut border in Westchester, he always followed UConn football. From his visits there, he likes the school, campus, setting, coaches, facilities and the distance from home, as he never wanted to go too far from home."
Aside from UConn, Syracuse and Penn State had also been showing increased interest recently.
"Since his known #1 offered, Tommy, my wife and I, his coach and the school athletic director were all in consensus to accept now," said Mr. Hopkins.
In the big picture of things, Mr. Hopkins realizes that everything worked out for the best.
"Not getting a real early offer was actually a blessing in disguise as he gave up lacrosse and just worked extremely hard lifting, running, and doing plyometrics and agility stuff," said Mr. Hopkins. "At your event (VTO/Rivals.com Camp) in New Jersey, it was a chance for him to showcase all of his hard work."
UConnReport.com will get in touch with Tommy Hopkins tonight to get his thoughts on his recent commitment.
